We would like to believe that an unfaithful significant other is doing so for an epic romance because of a Def-con Level 2 destruction event in their primary relationship. The unsavory truth is that, most often, it's not. In Playing with Fire by Whitney Cason, Chante has it all: fantastic husband, budding career, close circle of friends...new baby. After giving birth, Chante feels empty and unsatisfied with her marriage, falling quickly into a fling with a guy she met at a club during Girls' Night Out. Chante has to deal with the unexpected fallout and, eventually, her real reasons for cheating on her husband.In this steamy (!!!), raw novel about finding the balance between physical love and emotional love, Cason writes in a memoir-style format that lends itself well to the voice of her leading lady, Chante. At times it feels lackluster - needing more showing rather than telling to get the reader to buy in 100%. The ultimate in realistic yet unlikable (for me) narrator, Chante is selfish, impulsive, and deluded. She rarely seems to spend time with her daughter. Like her or not, people like her do exist and Cason has given her a voice in her first book. Cason shows excellent promise as a sexy romance author. If this is your cup of tea, definitely keep an eye on her!
If I could change just one thing about this book, it would be the repeated and incessant use of people's names as they talk to one another and the word "baby". A little dab will do. Cason's writing doesn't need constant pointing out of who is talking because she does an excellent job of giving each character voice and building scenes that are easy to follow. (Did I mention that it's her first book? And this is my only gripe.)
If you're looking for a sweet, endearing romance novel, this isn't it. However, if you are looking for a down-and-dirty, real life messy representation of playing with fire (see what I did there?), this is right down your alley and you'll want to follow Whitney Cason to the ends of the Earth.

This book is absolutely incredible. The plot line and characters draw you in and make you want to read more.
I really enjoyed this read with great characters. The plot off the chain. Wasn’t expecting that ending..My first read by this author but will not be by last.Congratulations on a different story line.
